Paris is beloved by many for good reason: streets that seem lifted straight from a favorite children's book, haute couture venerated by fashionistas everywhere, museums housing unparalleled collections, and restaurants—from the humble corner bistro to foodie temples like Pierre Gagnaire and Guy Savoy — that are the stuff of culinary legend. More than anywhere else, what you do with your time is about indulging in pleasure - even if you are doing nothing but people watching while sipping an aperitif at the local café. What's not to love?

Paris dons her finest for special celebrations this week. Les Bals des Pompier (Firemen's Balls) kicked the festivities off last night. Today's official Bastille Day celebrations began with concerts and a parade along the Champs Elysee featuring endless military fly overs and brigade after brigade marching by. And tonight will highlight the 120th anniversary of the unveiling of the Eiffel Tower, Paris’ most loved landmark. Revelers will be treated to what's being billed as the Iron Lady’s most spectacular fireworks display yet.

We'll be celebrating France’s Fête Nationale with a champagne picnic on the Champs Mars while enjoying a live concert from France’s beloved Johnny Hallyday (think French Elvis), capped off with the dazzling fireworks.

All of which is just a 10-minute walk from the front door of our newest fractional apartment on rue de l'Université.

Making its Paris debut

Our fractional ownership apartment on Saint Germain de Près’ chic Rue de l’Université makes its debut this week. The apartment has been beautifully renovated and decorated by distinguished designer Gisela Trigano. Paris’s most popular attractions, best shopping, and exclusive art and antique galleries are all within a few minutes walk. Visit the Musée d'Orsay everyday if you wish - it's literally at the end of the street!

Celebrating Today's Fête Nationale or Bastille Day

Celebrated on July 14th every year, Bastille Day is France’s Fête Nationale, and commemorates the anniversary of the storming of Paris' Bastille military fortress in 1789. The event is the lasting symbol of the French revolution and marks the birth of France as a modern nation.

On the evening of the 13th of July, local firehouses host traditional bals de pompiers, evenings of wine and dance and tame debauchery.

Bastille Day is commemorated in villages and cities throughout France. This year the Place de la Bastille hosts an outdoor concert with two stages and a choice of rock or world music. On the night of the 14th, official and unofficial fireworks displays dot the sky throughout France.

In Paris, the daytime highlight is the parade and air force flyover along the Champs Elysees, presided over by the President. Although the music and fireworks on the Champs de Mars won’t start until after 8pm, experienced Bastille Day goers lay out their stinky cheese and cwine picnics early in the day to be sure to get a good spot. For those who can’t be there in person, for the first time ever the city is broadcasting photos and video of the fireworks live on the web at www.14juillet2009.com
